Soda Feldspar is Mainly Used in Ceramic Production

Soda feldspar is a colorless, transparent, lustrous crystalline powder, its main component is sodium calcium silicate, and its chemical formula is NaAlSi3O8-CaAl2Si2O8. Its hardness is 6-6.5, its specific gravity is 2.6-2.8g/cm³, and its melting point is 1250°C.

The manufacturing process of albite powder generally includes mineral raw material beneficiation, crushing, grinding, screening, washing, drying and other processes. Among them, grinding is the key step, which needs to be processed by fine grinding machine to ensure the uniform and fine particle size of the product.

Soda feldspar is a ceramic flux that plays a vital role in ceramic production. This mineral is prized for its ability to lower the melting point of ceramic materials and promote the melting of other ingredients in the kiln during the firing process.

As a ceramic flux, soda feldspar improves the vitrification of clays and other minerals, resulting in a stronger, glassy surface in the final ceramic product. Its use as a flux is essential to obtain the required properties and aesthetics in various ceramic applications, making soda feldspar an essential ingredient in the ceramic field.

It occurs within ceramic parts when they are subjected to high temperatures during firing and subsequent cooling. If the glaze contains too much sodium, it will create a high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), causing tension between the glaze and the underlying clay body. This tension can cause defects such as cracking (hairline cracks in the glaze), chattering (peeling of the glaze), or even warping of the article.

To avoid such problems, potters must carefully test glaze recipes that contain large amounts of soda feldspar. This test involves firing a sample of the glaze on a test tile or sample piece to evaluate its compatibility with the clay body and its overall performance during the firing process. The glaze recipe may need to be adjusted, such as adding additional materials or changing the firing schedule, to ease tensions and ensure the production of high-quality ceramics.

In addition to being used as functional fillers in paints, plastics, rubbers and adhesives,  feldspar is also used in the production of artificial teeth, fertilizers and white cement.
